LANDMARK MEETING OF THE RAIL FREIGHT FORWARD COALITION

VIENNA MEETING LEADS TO DECLARATION BY EUROPEAN RAIL FREIGHT CEOS

On October 13, the CEOs of the European Rail Freight companies met for the CER UIC High-Level Freight meeting in Vienna. The participants comitted to help Europe reach energy efficiency in the transport sector quickly and, thereby, reduce Europe’s dependency on imported energy sources. For this, they are ready to go even beyond their original target of 30% modal share for rail by 2030, provided that the necessary framework conditions are in place.

The main points of the declaration (details in the linked PDF) include demands for compensation for rising energy prices, as well as sufficient infrastructure capacity for rail freight and general support for the competitiveness of the sector through co-funding of game-changing technologies such as European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC).
