RFF member Green Cargo was founded two decades ago with the objective of strengthening Sweden’s competitiveness as an attractive rail freight operator, and this is something that we are celebrating this year! The company currently has 1,800 employees who are continuing the creation of a sustainable and well-functioning freight transportation system.
The state-owned Statens Järnvägar (the Swedish State Railways), dating back to the mid-1800s, underwent a dramatic change at the turn of the century on 1st January 1 2001.
When Green Cargo was founded in 2001, the choice of name was very deliberate. Right from the beginning, sustainability was a natural part of our operations. The company takes their societal, environmental and financial responsibility seriously. When we talk about sustainable logistics, we don’t just consider the climatic element, but also the traffic safety, punctuality and cost-efficiency of shipments.
Twenty years later in the EU Year of Rail, Green Cargo is going from strength to strength and, together with the RFF coalition, is a pioneer of sustainable transport in Scandinavia.
Green Cargo is rooted in the origins of Swedish rail traffic and is the most experienced operator in rail logistics. Round the clock, they transport raw materials from forests and mines to the process industries, and consumer goods to the retail sector using 400 freight trains, which replaces the use of 8,800 trucks.
The company will continue to drive issues on central infrastructure investments for sustainable freight transportation and strengthen competitiveness for trade and industry for the next 20 years just as they have for the last 20.
Digital solutions are green solutions
Green Cargo has invested in a range of digital services to increase the benefits of rail freight transport for customers. Green Cargo Connect is part of the company's digitalisation journey to offer simpler and faster customer communication. With the help of the new services, customers can easily and quickly book transport, fill in consignment notes and track their transports.
In the platform, Green Cargo offers its customers both API services for seamless integration to their own systems and the ability to connect to the web interface, Customer Portal. Customers choose whether they want to connect to one or both solutions.
"We make it easier for our customers to choose sustainable transport. As one of Scandinavia's largest logistics partners, we can now offer our customers several digital logistics services. We hope that our customers look forward to our Green Cargo Connect service as much as we do", says Shane Harrington, Head of Customer Service at Green Cargo.
