CFL cargo Group
CFL cargo provides customer-orientated rail freight services to major European markets and specializes in cross-border rail traction. In addition to railway licenses and safety certificates in 6 countries (LU, FR, DE, BE, DK, FR, SE), CFL cargo benefits from its multilingual employees and has workshop expertise for the maintenance of rolling stock across Europe. CFL cargo is also founding member of the Xrail alliance for single wagonload transport. Together with its sister company CFL multimodal, the group’s services cover the entire logistics chain and offer extensive rail and multimodal services. Some of their activities are organized around the intermodal terminal Bettembourg-Dudelange (Luxembourg). Located on the Rail Freight Corridor 2 (North Sea-Mediterranean) and at the crossroads of the North-South and East-West transport routes, the terminal is ideally positioned to consolidate the flow of multimodal transport across Europe and beyond. With a total yearly capacity of 600,000 units, it is connected by regular intermodal trains to the main European ports and industrial regions.
Why is RFF important for the CFL cargo Group?
The RFF alliance is fostering international collaboration between rail stakeholders and active participation in interoperability projects. Capitalizing on its rail activities in Europe, the CFL Cargo Group is determined to be fully involved in this initiative and to be one of its driving forces. As a coalition member CFL Cargo has set long-term objectives for a better modal shift from road to rail by continuously improving the quality of its services and investing in innovative technologies such as digital train inspection, sensors and modular wagons.
Why is RFF important for Luxembourg?
Rising CO2 emissions as well as atmospheric pollution due to traffic congestion are a concern for Luxembourg. At the European level, RFF is shining a light onto the necessity of the ongoing intermodal shift as a global and efficient method to transport goods and an alternative to road haulage. CFL cargo together with CFL multimodal have been committed to the fight against climate change via sustainable developments and sustainable transport solutions for a long time now.

Why is RFF important for Europe?
The contribution of each stakeholder to reducing CO2 emissions, individually and collectively, is essential for the sustainable development of the European economy. For rail transport players as well as public Luxembourgish stakeholders, this means being able to take up 3 daunting challenges in order to join forces: committing fully to the European railway project, financing the modal shift, continuing to implement a strong-willed policy for the promotion of rail transport at a national level. We believe that a strong RFF alliance is capable of addressing these major challenges of the future.
What have we achieved so far at CFL cargo and in Luxembourg as part of RFF?
In the past years, the Luxembourgish government's framework for action was set out in the Mobility Strategy, which sets a double objective for transport and mobility: to improve the quality and effectiveness of passenger and goods transport as well as reduce their impact on the environment.
It is further characterized by a proactive policy in favor of rail freight and by important investments by the Luxembourgish government for an improved modal distribution and the promotion of intermodal transport through the modernization and the extension of the railway infrastructure.
Today, this strong-willed policy enables CFL cargo and CFL multimodal to save more than 400,000 tons CO2 per year. Capitalizing on the RFF network, our group aims at further increasing the modal shift.
